Benevento president blames ‘witches’ for the club’s poor form so far this season

Did you know that there’s a team playing among Europe’s top five leagues this season with a worse record than Crystal Palace?

That’s right Roy, your boys aren’t doing quite so bad after all.

That’s because newly promoted Serie A side Benevento are currently rock-bottom of the Italian top-flight, having lost all 12 of their opening matches in the league.

In fact, they’re just one game away from breaking Manchester United’s age-old record of 12 consecutive league defeats from the start of a season, after their defeat against Juventus on Sunday.

Miraculously, the lowly club had led against the title-holders at half-time, before eventually losing 2-1 – which means they now equal the record set by United in the 1930-31 season.

Ouch.

The Stregoni – who have scored just five goals this season and conceded 31 – next face Sassuolo on Nov 13,

But they should be buoyed by their improved performance against Juve at the weekend, coupled with their desperation to avoid breaking the unwanted record.

And club president Oreste Vigorito reiterated this point in a recent interview with Gazzetta dello Sport, claiming the club can still remain in the Serie A this season – but blamed supernatural, malignant influences for their unfortunate campaign.

Oh?

He said: “There’s so much praise from everywhere, but always without points.

“The blame lies with the malignant influences which have always been associated with this city… witches. Yes, it’s true. I’m superstitious.”

Umm, what?

Apparently, the city of Benevento is known in Italy as ‘The City of Witches’, due to the legend that witchcraft was often practised there in ancient times.

Citizens would even leave broomsticks or salt on their doorsteps to ward off witches from entering their homes during the night.

Spooky, no?

For this reason, Benevento’s badge contains the image of a witch on a broomstick.

The Campania-based club were promoted to Serie A at the end of last season for the first time in their history, after narrowly beating Capri in Serie B play-offs.

Maybe the witches had a day off that day?
